The long object besides the howitzer is the ram rod, the ram rod is used to 'ram' the 45 kg 155mm shell so that it seats near the end of the chamber.

On the the FH-77B the ram rod is used only if the hydraulic rammer is out of service or APU is not switched on, else the shell is rammed into the chamber automatically.
